18 December 2025, Prague – Prague expects to welcome some 750,000 domestic and international visitors over the course of December. This figure is comparable to last year, when 768,000 tourists arrived in the capital during the Advent period. As in previous years, the highest concentration of visitors is traditionally seen around the turn of the year.

“On New Year’s Eve, we estimate that around 80,000 to 100,000 people will arrive in Prague,” says František Cipro, chair of Prague City Tourism’s board of directors. “This year, the rules governing the use of pyrotechnics have been tightened further, with the aim of reducing the impact of noisy celebrations on animals, people, and the natural environment. This is also reflected in our long-term Enjoy Respect campaign, which encourages both visitors and residents to act considerately.”

The largest numbers of foreign visitors to Prague come from Germany, the USA, and the United Kingdom, with a marked increase also seen among tourists from Asia. In the period from Christmas Eve to 31 December alone, total visitor numbers in Prague are estimated at around 200,000. While overall visitor numbers remain largely stable year on year, the composition of travellers and their travel behaviour continue to evolve over the longer term.

“Prague is increasingly welcoming a more affluent clientele,” František Cipro adds. “Travellers are seeking out high-quality hotels and restaurants and are focusing more on experiential tourism. Major sporting and music events are a key draw.” Data collated by the Czech Statistical Office indicates that approximately two thirds of visitors stay in four- and five-star hotels. Based on recent analyses from STR, which monitors the hotel business, hotel occupancy rates in Prague have hovered at around 85% during December in recent years.

The city’s festive atmosphere and Christmas markets are always among the main December attractions. Visitors also tend to show a strong interest in heritage sites managed by Prague City Tourism. Last year, these sites were visited by around 170,000 people, and similar figures are projected again this year. The Old Town Hall remains the most visited site. Popular attractions also include rides on the festively decorated vintage Tram 42, while the ice rink on Wenceslas Square continues to grow in popularity and will remain open to skaters until mid-February.
